This spectacular photograph was taken by Partridge for the Welton Becket and Associates architectural firm that designed the building. Typically, Partridge printed and stamped only a few images in very limited numbers that were used by Becket to promote their work. When I talked to him about ten years ago, Partridge told me that he kept no copies, so work from this period of his life is very scarce. This photo of the building by Partridge is reproduced on page 155 of Total Design: Architecture of Welton Becket and Associates by William Dudley Hunt, Jr., McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1972, which is the major monograph on the architectural firm. Rondal Partridge is the son of Imogen Cunningham and started his photography career in the 1930s as an apprentice to Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams. In 2003, the California Historical Society Press published the first substantial monograph on the photographer, Quizzical Eye: The Photography of Rondal Partridge by Elizabeth Partridge and Sally Stein. As described in the book, Partridge was a master of architectural photography. This is an excellent example of his outstanding eye. His work compares favorably with other famous architectural photographers such as Julius Shulman, Ezra Stoller, and Marvin Rand.
