Description: This is a first printing copy of "Roughing It" by Mark Twain, a 591 page (plus 1 page of publisher's ads at the back), 6"x9" hardcover published in 1872 by American Publishing Company (Hartford, CT). It meets all points required of a "first state" copy (and the last bullet point below indicates it's an early first state printing): Page 156 the T in Trees is capitalized, and "thirteenth" instead of "sixteenth"Page 242 lines 20-21 the words "he" and "his" are present (see photo)Page 330 line 23 "Eastern" is capitalizedPage 592 has the publisher's adsPage ix the "M" in "My Brother" looks normalPage 19 the "Y" in the first "My" looks normalTitle page lists George M. Smith & Co. as the Boston agent at the bottomIn acceptable condition. The gilt-decorated brown cloth boards are exposed at the corners, rubbed, show loss and small holes to the cloth at the spine, and the spine covering is detached along the front. Six leaves containing the two frontispieces and the title page are loose, and it's starting to crack at the dedication page. There's a small pencil mark to the ffep, an ownership mark to the first flyleaf. The interior is slightly age-toned and a couple pages are browned where they were used to press flowers. As a bonus, you'll receive an early printing of Twain's book "A Tramp Abroad," a 631 page, 6"x9" hardcover published in 1880 (perhaps a bit later) by American Publishing Company. In acceptable condition, missing all pages at the front prior to the list of illustrations (including the double frontispiece and title page), front cover almost loose, bookplate and mark to the front pastedown.
