Description: Complete set of screw tip auger bits from Russell Jennings that are in excellent shape. The wooden box is black labeled from Chester Connecticut and is in excellent condition. The box holds 13 bits in a three tiered hinged shelf system from 1/4 to 1 inch. The two 4/16” and 14/16” bits are dual marked as Russell Jennings and Stanley. Six bits 5/16” thru 9/16”, and 16/16” bits are labeled vertically on the shaft as Russel Jennings. Bits 10/16” - 13/16” and 15/16” are labeled horizontally on the shaft as Russell Jennings. See picture of bits. Dating this stuff is difficult. The box, because of the black label, seems to be from around 1910. The 2 dual labeled bits may be from when Russel Jennings was acquired from Stanley around 1940. The vertically labeled bits are pictured on a patent issued 1855. Note that these bits have much thicker forged shafts. The remaining Jennings bits were probably manufactured between these two dates. The box and bits appear to represent a significant portion of the history of the Russell Jennings Company. It’s difficult to imagine that the original set of bits, if actually used in woodworking, would have survived intact until today - especially auger bits.
