She moved to England with her family in 1939. In 1951 she married Indian architect C.S.H. Jhabvala and moved with him to India. Jhabvala was the author of twelve novels, including Heat and Dust, which was awarded Britain's prestigious Booker Prize. She was also a MacArthur Fellow and received a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A talented screenwriter, Jhabvala earned two Academy Awards (A Room With a View and Howards End) with her work for Merchant-Ivory Productions.
