Description: St John of CapestranoHoly Medal on 24" Stainless steel neckchainPatron of Military Chaplains Brand new 7/8" oval nickel silver medal with that soft vintage look and wonderful old-fashioned image of this "soldier saint" of the 14-15th centuries. He gave his name to missions in California and elsewhere; and is more often called San Juan Capistrano, which is the name on this medal. St John is shown wearing his Franciscan robes and holding up one hand as if preaching; in the other he holds a large flag which represents the crusader's flag. The medal has oxidation added to show the details, and the dates of his birth and death are also on the front of the medal (1386-1458). On the back of the medal are large block letters "Pray for Us" and a smaller "Italy" where it was made. We have securely attached the medal to a 24" to a continuous stainless chain that is 24" around and has no clasp. Long enough to slip easily over most size heads to put on and take off. Comes gift boxed and with a St John of Capistrano prayer card, and a gift bag and tissue paper, so your medal comes all ready to give as a gift. St John of Capistrano was a Franciscan priest and a fiery preacher, who worked against the heresies of his time, and helped to reform the Franciscan order which he felt had become too lax in observation of the strict rules. He was very successful in preaching throughout Europe, but especially in the northern countries such as Germany. Some people may object that St John preached anti-Semitism; which caused people to attack Jews. If we remember the time when St John lived; consider that if he preached a sermon about the Passion, all he had to do was reach the point where the "Jews in the crowd hollered 'Crucify Him" and it would be enough to stir up the peasants against the Jews in their town. In those days, it didn't take much! What we do know for sure that when St John was aged 70, he preached and helped to lead a crusade against the Turks who had besieged Belgrade and had reached Constantinople; it was successful and thereby many Christians were saved from horrible slaughter. St John of Capistrano is a saint for our times - considering what is going on in the Middle East right now, we could certainly use a "crusader saint's" heavenly help to obtain peace and help in the fight of all good people against the fanatical Islamists and terrorists.
