Description: Sixth and Final Issue in the Gates of Paradise Series Collectors Plates Faithfully Reproduced from the Florence Baptistery East Doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti Strictly Limited First Edition of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba by Ennio Furiesi Porte del Paradiso (Salomone e la Regina di Saba) - Battistero di San Giovanni, FirenzeThis relief in the Gates of Paradise in Florence's Baptistery by Ghiberti shows the scene of the meeting between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. According to the Bible, the unnamed Queen of Sheba, intrigued by the stories of Solomon's wisdom and wealth, embarked on the six-month journey from Sheba to Jerusalem across the Arabian desert with a caravan loaded with spices, gold and jewels to meet the king. The queen tested Solomon's wisdom with questions and riddles the king had always answers for. In the biblical accounts of this royal meeting, there is no hint of any romantic aspect to the encounter, which is depicted as a monarchial meeting on affairs of state. In the Christian tradition, this visit has been compared to the metaphorical marriage of the Church to Christ where Solomon is the anointed one or the messiah and Sheba represents a Gentile population submitting to the messiah.
