Description: San Damiano Crucifix Cross Italy 3 in Tall 2 in Wide Wall Mount The San Damiano Cross was one of a number of crosses painted with similar figures during the 11th century in Umbria. The name of the painter is unknown, but it was made around the year 1100. The purpose of an icon cross was to teach the meaning of the event depicted and thereby strengthen the faith of the people. Above His head is a portrayal of the Ascension: Christ emerging from a red circle, holding a golden cross which is now His sceptre. A host of angels welcome him into heaven, while at the very top of this scene the right hand of God the Father is extended in benediction.
