Description: Up for sale is a vintage rugby "Official Programme - England v. Scotland at Twickenham" from Saturday, 15th March, 1947. The program measures approximately 8 1/2" x 6 1/4" when closed. When opened, it measures 8 1/2" x 12 1/2". It is on paper with blue and red writing. The Six Nations Championship is the oldest rugby championship in the world, dating back to 1882. Originally held between the four United Kingdom countries England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. France joined in 1910 and Italy joined in 2000. With the outbreak of World War II, it meant the curtailment of the championships in 1940, until it resumed in 1947. This is also the first Calcutta Cup Program since 1939, a yearly match between England and Scotland. The first Calcutta Cup was played at Raeburn Place, Edinburg, on 10 Marc 1879. Matches have continued on an annual basis ever since, except for two interruptions due to the World Wars between 1915-1919 and 1940-1946. This game is the annual match between the two nations in the Six Nations Champtionship. They alternate between Murrayfield Stadium in Scotland (on even years) and Twickenham Stadium (on odd years). Overall, the program is in Good- Condition. The paper has wear and browning, due to age. There are creases in the corners, and some nicks along the edges. There is heavier browning on the back page. There is also a crease down the middle of the program, where a previous owner folded it in half. Because of this, there is a crease down the middle of both the England side and the Scotland side, of the opened program. The England side has some stains and browning, particularly along this crease. This program is a very nice piece of sports history! It is one of the first programs printed from the 1947 Six Nationals Championship, as well as the first Calcutta Cup match, when no other games had been played or programs had been printed since 1939.
