Description: "Scrambles Amongst the Alps / Down the Rhine" is a 164 + 75 page (plus 15 plates), 6.75"x9.5" hardcover written by Edward Whymper (Scrambles...) and Lady Blanche Murphy (Rhine), and published circa 1880 by The Burrows Brothers Co. (Cleveland, Ohio). Whymper describes his nine years scaling peaks in the Alps, including the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 (during which 4 members of his party lost their lives). There are black-and-white illustrations throughout, many by the author. This first American edition (it appeared in England in 1871) appends travel writer Lady Murphy's Down the Rhine, describing sites along the European river. The book is in acceptable condition. The beveled green cloth boards are frayed at the corners and spine ends, rubbed, show various small spots and short scratches, and the color and gilt decorations have faded. The spine is cocked, it's cracked at the hinges and title page and the binding is a bit shaken. There's a small pencil mark to the first flyleaf and the interior is age-toned. The frontispiece has a moisture stain.
