Description: DESCRIPTION This woodcut leaf was printed in 1530 and is nearly 500 years old. This woodcut leaf includes TWO (2) original woodcut prints by Hans Sebald Beham. The biggest woodcut's print title is : "Christ and the Apostles on the Sea of Galilee'' (714 Pauli) - 9.3 x 6.6 cm (3.66 inches x 2.60 inches). Illustrating the Bible passage of Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus Calms the Storm: 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”The smallest woodcut's print title is ''Initial with depiction of St Matthew'' (703 Pauli) - 3.4 x 3.4 cm. The woodcut leaf is from Christenliche außlegung der Evangelienn - Johann Eck's sermons for the church year (Christian interpretations of the Gospels from the time, through the whole year (...)), with original woodcuts by Sebald Beham. The medium-sized leaf measures 29.1 x 19.1 cm and is unframed. This leaf is the leaf 61 from the First volume of the sermons of Johann Eck's ''Christenliche''. It is from the Gospels of Nach Epiphanie (After the Epiphany)/ On The Fourth Sunday (''An Dem Vierten Sontag'', German).Epiphany, also known as "Theophany" in Eastern Christian tradition, is a Christian feast day commemorating the visit of the Magi, the baptism of Jesus, and the wedding at Cana. In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child, and thus Jesus Christ's physical manifestation to the Gentiles. It is sometimes called Three Kings' Day, and in some traditions celebrated as Little Christmas. Moreover, the feast of the Epiphany, in some denominations, also initiates the liturgical season of Epiphanytide.(See below for more informations about the 1530 book) The style is old master and the print was produced using woodcut printing techniques. Very rare edition. The first work, in two volumes, is on the gospels, arranged according to church year with volume one covering gospel readings from Advent to Easter and volume two contains gospel readings from Easter to Advent. The third volume was printed in Augsburg (1531) for an Ingolstadt publisher, consists of sermons given on high holidays of the church year. Only these three volumes include the exquisite woodcuts by Hans Sebald Beham which are described in detail in Gustav Pauli's Hans Sebald Beham Ein Kritisches Verzeichniss (Strassburg; 1901) numbers 703 - 747 and see pages 334 (vols. I & II) and 481 (vol. III). Some of the woodcuts have been attributed to Hans Schäuferlein and M. Ostendorfer (whose monogram appears on several). Muther (German Book Illustration) notes that Beham shared the 41 drawings in 1530 for this book with Ostendorfer and the artist L.B. Although there are some traces of use minor defects, they don't affect the beautiful woodcuts which appear in fine dark impressions. Elaborate historiated woodcut title borders on each part with 63 woodcuts by Hans Sebald Beham and Hans Schäuferlein in vols I & II and 45 woodcuts by Beham and M. Ostendorfer in vol. III. § VD16 E 282 (1st 2 vols.), VD16 E 283 (3rd vol.); Adams E-31; Stalla, Ingolstadt 67, 68; Pauli, Beham nos. 703 - 747 & pages 334, 481; Dodgson I, 442, 11, D & II, 127, 8 & 241, 2; Muther 1145.
