Description: Measures 6-11/16" X 10-5/32", 32 full color pages plus covers, Issue #5 (April 1989), published by Marvel Comics (NY). This title deserved a much longer run than only 9 issues; but a realistic war comic stuck out like a sore thumb amongst Marvel Comics' other mostly superhero titles. Principle illustrators were JOHN SEVERIN (who had been among the E C COMICS crew on the 1950s military titles FRONTLINE COMBAT and TWO-FISTED TALES, as well as JAMES WARREN's comic magazine BLAZING COMBAT in the 1960s); and SAM GLANZMAN (another Golden Age craftsman, who had worked on war comics at DELL, CHARLTON and DC COMICS, particularly G. I. COMBAT and OUR ARMY AT WAR), both of whom brought a grim realism to these historical events involving the U. S. MARINE CORPS. And, while it may have been tempting to politicize the title, writer MICHAEL P. PALLADINO attempted to maintain an even hand, particularly when depicting international conflicts into which American involvement may have been questionable. But the readership just wasn't high enough to maintain the title; and MARVEL COMICS lost the faith with SEMPER FI after only 9 issues. A real shame -- scoop them up while you can, as they are SOLID reading! Featured contents:Cover art -- JOHN SEVERIN A LOUSY WAY TO DIE! (1900 BOXER REBELLION IN CHINA) -- written by MICHAEL P.
