For your consideration is this very scarce 101 year old antique booklet documenting the 200 year anniversary 1723-1923 of the Caroline Church located in Setauket, Long Island, New York. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The Caroline Church played a part in the American Revolution and is most remembered for being involved in the “Battle of Setauket”. The Church’s congregation remained loyal to the British Crown and one rebel skirmish was fought within range of the Church on August 22, 1777 (coincidentally the 54 year anniversary of the establishment of the Caroline Church). Patriot soldiers with mounted cannon attacked the Presbyterian Meeting House next door to the Church which British soldiers had fortified. The short rebellion lasted but a few hours, when the Patriot soldiers returned to their boats and headed back across Long Island Sound to Connecticut. Incidentally, Setauket is also where General George Washington’s famous Culper Spy Ring was based. The Culper Spy Ring operated successfully in and around New York City for five years, during which time no spy was ever unmasked. Indeed even Washington was ignorant of the spies' identities. Major Benjamin Tallmadge born in Setauket, New York headed the Spy Ring and his informants consisted of trusted friends he made at school on Long Island, including patriots Austin Roe, Caleb Brewster, Abraham Woodhull, and Anna Strong all from Setauket. I have had this piece in my possession collection of ephemera since the early 1970’s and only recently decided to list it for someone else to enjoy. I cannot imagine many of these books have survived and are still around for consumption. The booklet is titled “A History of Caroline Church – Setauket, L. I., N. Y.” as prepared for the “TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY’ of its organization – “AUGUST 22, 1923”. The booklet is 101 years old and measures approximately 8-7/8" wide (from right to left) and 8.75” long (from top to bottom). The booklet is comprised of (38) thirty-eight numbered pages between the front and back cover. The pages of the booklet are securely bound by the use of two staples placed in the programs center fold. Refer to description photos #2, #12 and #13 to verify size dimensions and for more details about what I have described. The booklet provides a very interesting and detailed history of this historic landmark church from its establishment in colonial America in the year 1723 up to its bicentennial 200 year anniversary in 1923. The booklet remains in very good condition for being over 100 years old and shows very little wear. The outside covers have scattered minor foxing from honest age but all the internal pages are clean. All the page corners remain crisp and sharp and there is no writing on and/or damage to any of the internal pages. The aforementioned notwithstanding, as a matter of full disclosure, there is a person’s name and location handwritten in lead pencil on the top of the back cover. Although a little faint and written in old fashion fancy script lettering, the name and location “appear” to read as follows below. Refer to description photos #6 and #7 for more details about what I have described. “CHARLES H. PEIFFER” “ST. CLOUD – PA.” Overall, this antique piece is in fantastic condition for being 101 years old and is most certainly a rare historical piece of Setauket, Long Island, New York memorabilia that belongs in the appreciative hands of a local Setauket historian and/or collector of ephemera.
