Share the magic! ****** The late genius, Phil Goldstein, created so much great card magic, it is hard to pick a #1 favorite. But somewhere among my favorite Top 10 or Top 20, I would definitely include Shinkansen. It is his "minimalist" approach to the classic cards across plot. And his very clever thinking makes the effect quite amazing, and the handling super-clean and apparently moveless. It is a packet version of the effect, using just two 4-card packets (one red backed, one blue backed). The actions are quite simple looking to the spectator, but I will describe exactly what she sees, and it might sound a bit more complicated than it really is... But the actions are all smooth and logical. It goes like this: A packet of red cards is counted facedown to show four red backs. The packet is turned faceup and the cards are dealt singly onto the table in a faceup pile. To make sure there are just four cards, no more no less, the spectator is handed the faceup packet and she deals it again into a faceup pile on the table. (There are really only four cards, so she can do this!) The red packet is turned facedown, and attention drawn to the other blue packet. The faces of the cards in this packet are shown singly to the spectator -- she sees four different cards. The packet is turned facedown, and cards are moved singly from the bottom to the top, until the spectator decides to stop. She is shown the card stopped at, and she remembers it. The blue packet is waved over the red packet, and immediately turned faceup and dealt to the table -- now there are only three cards in the blue packet. The card she is thinking of is no longer there. Without a move, hands obviously empty, the magician spreads the facedown red packet, and there is a blue card in the middle of it! The blue card is turned faceup and it is the card that vanished from the red packet. Things to note: full faces of the cards are shown throughout, and you are never holding more cards than you say you have. (And no cards are added or taken away). These aspects make Shinkansen so deceptively clean, the vanish and reappearance of the card seems absolutely impossible. You need to use a few common packet magic sleights (which are covered in the 16 page instruction booklet), and one of them is a sleight that many card workers shy away from. But it is not a hard sleight, and there is some built in misdirection that will help -- Shinkansen is a great routine to convince you that you CAN use this sleight successfully. (Because you can, and will!)
