Thanks. From the dust jacket inside flap: East Tennessee in 1863 was picked almost clean by raiders and foraging parties of both armies. Life was furtive and meager. A man might be killed for a good pair of boots and no horse was safe from either army. Medicine was gone, soap hardly a memory. For food there was only the inevitable corn, kept hidden and ground a few ears at a time, washed down with acorn coffee. Fear moved into the run-down houses. Women felt cold sweat break out when they heard hoofbeats by night. Always, it seemed, there was the sound of galloping hoofs. But in 1863 Caroline Donelson still stayed in her ruined place, with only a hill girl and an old Negro deaf-mute, while her nephew rode with General Morgan’s dashing cavalry. The household’s common need made her overlook the fact that the hill girl was a Union sympathizer. Then her gallant nephew, carrying dispatches, stops off at Caroline’s home to rest a faltering horse. At the same time, chance and the eddies of war bring there a neighbor, a young widow of a Confederate officer, and also Barclay Heath, a lovely Kentucky girl searching for her brother, a Union cavalryman reported wounded near by. Four women and one war-worn young man! In the few troubled hours he stays, each of the women guesses shrewdly the feelings of the other three for him. Conflicts and alliances between them are established, to be strengthened by developments. The widow, who shares his passionate belief in the Confederacy, wants him selfishly with every predatory drop of her blood. Barclay Heath loves him painfully and doubtfully across the chasm of their opposed loyalties. The hill girl craves him. His aunt is concerned only to keep him safe and happy. Surrounded by war, often caught up in it, these four women have their private conflict to resolve. They adjust almost automatically to the privation, suffering and death throughout the stricken country. Between the young widow and Barclay Heath there are jealousy and distrust, augmented by a hidden crime. Between Barclay and the young Confederate officer there are long misunderstanding and divided allegiance. But the story shines with a steadfast love that burns clear and brightens the somber years of war. Helen Topping Miller is a fine romantic writer and in this story of the War Between the States she is at her best. She knows East Tennessee and she knows the war. She says, “All the incidents are taken from actual happenings to connections of my family or friends. A grandmother of my brother-in-law shot the Union officer after her sixteen-year-old son had been pursued while wounded and shot on the ground. My own mother-in-law, then sixteen, nursed and helped her mother bury a young Union soldier who crawled into their coal shed to die. It was she who gathered the corn spilled by Union cavalry horses, washed and ground it when Knoxville was starving under siege.” She has a moving story of war-crossed love and tells it with skill and feeling. Shod with Flame will tug at the hearts of her accustomed readers and bring her many new friends. Powered by eBay Turbo Lister
