Every time I see this particular GREEN LANTERN cover, I am swept back to a rainy Thursday afternoon in the late summer of 1959. Thursdays were when the new comic books were delivered to Ralph's Grocery Store, just a block up the street. I had just moved to the neighborhood, and my new friend John, who lived directly across the street, was introducing me to the habits of the neighborhood, one of which was scoping out the new comics on Thursdays. Clutching my quarter allowance, I followed John up Hickory Street, into the chilly aisles of Ralph's, and back into the newsstand area. A single spinner displayed the latest treasures; and John and I argued over the merits of many of the books. I finally settled upon the latest issues of ACTION COMICS and SUPERMAN; but John was magnetically drawn to that first great issue of SHOWCASE PRESENTS that featured a super-hero with whom neither of us was familiar. This fella wore a green doublet over black tights, and some kind of ray was bursting from a ring on one of his fingers. John paged through the comic, and was hooked. Somewhat lighter by 30 cents, we walked back down the hill to my house, and stretched out on the front porch, sharing our new comics back and forth, interrupted only by my Mom, who brought us a couple bottles of Coke, and a tray of cookies. One of the best rainy day memories in my entire 70-plus years; and this volume of SHOWCASE PRESENTS brings those memories back by the trunkful.
