Sievers has compiled the first definitive biography on America's twenty-third President. In the late 1940s, Sievers uncovered volumes of incomplete biographical notes compiled by several Harrison scholars. He immediately set about completing this research, to reveal the great influence of a President whom history had overlooked. Benjamin Harrison: Hoosier Warrior chronicles Harrison's life from his boyhood on his family's farm in Ohio through his military career in the Civil War. Benjamin Harrison was born August 20, 1833 at the North Bend, Ohio estate of his late grandfather — William Henry ("Old Tippecanoe") Harrison, ninth President of the United States. Ben's parents, John Scott and Elizabeth Irwin Harrison, were devout Presbyterians who instilled in their son his lifelong devotion to the church. They also fed his insatiable appetite for knowledge by stocking their home library with biographies and history books, encouraging "Little Ben" to study between farm chores. Though the Harrisons suffered numerous financial difficulties, they managed to send Ben to Farmers' College in Cincinnati. At Farmers', Ben studied under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Hamilton Bishop, Professor of History and Political Economy, who trained him to memorize, interpret and revere facts - skills he would come to depend on as a lawyer. While in Cincinnati, Harrison met his future wife, Carrie Scott. When Carrie and her family moved to Oxford, Ohio, Ben decided to transfer to Miami University in Oxford. He courted Carrie during his remaining years at the University and through his legal apprenticeship, marrying her in 1853. The slavery issue was the focal point of American politics by the mid-1850s. This issue caused the virtual disintegration of the Whig Party, the Party with which the Harrison family had long been associ-ated. Most Whigs, like Benjamin Harrison, who were opposed to slavery, threw their support to the newly-formed Republican Party.Others, like Ben's father, aligned with the more conservative American Party. Fortunately, their political differences did not interfere with the close relationship and mutual respect of father and son. Ben Harrison's political beliefs, his skill as a speaker, and his family name all made him an attractive candidate to the Republican party leaders in Indianapolis. In 1857, Harrison was elected City Attorney - his first step toward achieving the political prominence he now desired. The following year he accepted the highly visible position of Secretary to the State Republican Central Committee. And in 1860 he was elected Supreme Court Reporter. The attack on Fort Sumter came in 1861, and with it, the beginning of the Civil War. At first Harrison chose not to enlist and felt that his place was at home, caring for his family and running his thriving law practice. But when the Governor asked for his help in recruiting troops trom the area, Harrison enlisted and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Within months he was made Colonel of the 70th Indiana Volunteers. This appointment marked the beginning of Benjamin Harrison's transition from an earnest young lawyer and civil servant with impressive family connections to a courageous and respected leader in his own right... Volume II: Hoosier Statesman, Hoosier President The second volume of Harry J. Sievers' comprehensive biography begins in 1865 with attorney-turned-Civil War hero Benjamin Harrison's return to Indianapolis. When Harrison returned home, his primary concern was to earn a comfortable living for his family. He devoted himself to his legal practice, taking on several notorious cases that earned him a national reputation for courtroom oratory. Although he was active in local politics, and a vocal opponent of Southern reconstruction, Harrison was ambivalent about running for office and repeatedly refused the Republican Party's pleas that he run for Congressman. When he was first asked to run for Governor, Harrison declined and said, "you must allow me to follow, and not to lead." Eventually he yielded and ran for Governor in 1876. He lost that race, but not the interest of Republican Party leaders. His success in campaigning for Rutherford Hayes, and later for James Garfield, gave him the broad following he would later use to win the presidency. In 1881, Benjamin Harrison was elected to the Senate. There he championed the rights of blacks, American Indians, disabled veterans, and the needy, and fought for the protection of natural resources. He was seemingly re-elected by a narrow margin in 1886, but when the Democrats forced a recount, Harrison was unseated. Support for Harrison as a presidential candidate grew over the next couple of years, culminating in his nomination by the Republican National Convention in the summer of 1888. In another close election, Harrison trailed Democratic incumbent Grover Cleveland by over 90,000 popular votes, but won the majority of electoral votes and became the twenty-third President of the United States. As President, Benjamin Harrison sought to protect American business by imposing tariffs on foreign imports. But the tariffs led to price increases for consumer goods, and many of his one-time supporters defected to the Democratic Party. Harrison is best remembered for his reform of the civil service system, which had been plagued by patronage; for enacting a pension bill to provide for disabled Civil War veterans and their families; and for hosting the first Pan-American Conference, which helped promote the expansion of United States trade to Latin America. In the presidential race of 1892, the unpopular tariff proved to be the downfall of the Republicans. Moreover, Harrison was too preoccupied with his wife Carrie's failing health, and subsequent death, to campaign in earnest. In fact, Harrison was so stung by his beloved Carrie's death that the loss of the election did not disappoint him. He said that, "after the heavy blow the death of my wife dealt me, I do not think I could have stood the strain a re-election would have brought." The Democratic nominee, former President Grover Cleveland, became the only president in history to be re-elected to a non-consecutive term... This second volume of Benjamin Harrison is a worthy addition to your Library of the Presidents.
