The copyright date for this edition is 1923. Signed by the author on the copyright page at the limitation statement without inscription or personalization. Also included with this item is a Machen memorial item produced for and distributed at the 2013 World Fantasy Convention in Brighton, England titled The Up-and-Beyond of Brighton Machenalia and subtitled Arthur Machen at 150: 1863-2013 produced by the Friends of Arthur Machen society. This is a stapled booklet of 28 pages, a little creased from coming back from England in my luggage. Contains two Brighton related pieces by Machen, information about Machen and some of his Brighton friends like artist Aubrey Beardsley and Count Stenbock. Synopsis: Machen, née Arthur Llewellyn Jones (1863-1947), was a Welsh novelist, short story writer, and translator. He is well-regarded by connoisseurs of horror and supernatural fiction but not as well known outside the field as he deserves to be. The Chronicle of Clemendy was his first short story collection. "Strange Story of a Red Jar," one of the stories in the collection, is about a monk who finds an ancient jar full of wine from the Roman occupation. Drinking the wine brings about visions of bacchantes. Unfortunately, only 350 copies of The Chronicle of Clemendy were printed, and I was unable to read it or "Strange Story of a Red Jar." But judging from the contemporary reaction, it was well thought of, and E.F. Bleiler says of The Chronicle of Clemendy that it was "probably written to satisfy one of the affectations of the day, bowdlerized, sentimentalized Rabelais. Heavily tongue-in-cheek...amusing stories with a bookish joi de vivre." Condition: Binding - fine, rebound in real leather, new marbled endpapers, page edges trimmed to remove soiling, this book is like new, the ink used by the author to sign the copyright page limitation statement did soak through to the title page side a little. Dust jacket - none, unknown if this book ever had one.
