My story is West Texas, the 1920's, 30's, and 40's, the happenings that produced "the Establishment" of today. I think we were pioneers in our own right. We were no longer fighting Indians, but a more fierce enemy: Poverty, so ingrained, so believed, so religious, so real, so accepted, so hopeless we could not believe there were living humans who had hot and cold running water, flush toilets, changes of clothing, ability to travel, leisure time and anything other than back-breaking labor, bare sustenance, bare floors, and many times almost bare be-hinds! But we survived, and the memories are more precious for the experience. Put yourself into my place or into the place of one of my friends or family members. Laugh and cry, but enjoy. This poor but highly ethical West Texas family survived the Great Depres ion, the Second World War, years of unemployment, and kept their sense of honor along with their sense of humor. With a strong Christian faith they remained respectable and respected (for the most part). I asked Daddy and Mama how we made it all the way and Daddy said, "Only by the grace of God.” Mama added, “And a lot of prayer.” Copyright © 2018-2023 TDM Inc.
