Description: REMINISCENCES OF BIG I BY LIEUTENANT WILLIAM NATHANIEL WOOD 2nd Lieutenant, Monticello Guard, Company “A, 19th Virginia Regiment, Confederate States of America EDITED BY BELL IRVIN WILEY SIGNED BY THE EDITOR - CIVIL WAR HISTORIAN BILLY WILEY FIRST EDITION FINE CONDITION BOOK ORIGINAL DUST JACKET Sharp, Clean, Solidly Bound, Antiquarian Book Richly Illustrated Excellent, First Hand, Confederate Memoir PUBLISHED BY McCOWAT-MERCER PRESS, INC., JACKSON, TENNESSEE, IN 1956 The direct and poignant recollections of a company-grade officer who worked up through the ranks and became a company-grade officer in the Monticello Guard, Company A, 19th Virginia Infantry from Albemarle County. Enhanced with a muster roll for Company A, 19th Virginia Regiment, listing name, rank, age, eye and hair color, complexion, height, place of birth, occupation, date and place of enlistment, by whom enlisted, and for what period. A separate roll details casualties and the final disposition of the men of Co. A. Wood served in campaigns from First Manassas to the end of the war. This first-hand memoir provides excellent insights into each of these battles and the events and personality surrounding them. His first-hand account as a Confederate, company-grade officer during Pickett’s charge at Gettysburg provides a wonderful illumination. This is the best-edited, best-produced volume to come from the team of Bell Wiley and Seale Johnson, the Confederate entrepreneurs of Tennessee’s McCowat-Mercer Press. Nat Wood was no stuffed-shirt aristocrat. He was more the red-blooded American yeoman type. He worked himself up from private, and he fought the war the hard way. His narrative was written a good many years after the close of the war, but it retains a freshness lacking in many narratives of the old veteran type. Wood wrote directly and simply. And he himself comes through the story as a direct and simple character, a character of conviction and capability. This original, first edition book is signed by the editor, Civil War historian Bell I. Wiley. The book is in excellent condition and comes in the original dust jacket that that is clean and bright with light edge wear. The book is super nice, clean, bright, sharp and solidly bound throughout. The editior's signature is strong and clear and is on a special Rebel Shavetail Edition book page (see photo). The interior is clean and there isn’t a mark in the book; it has no writing, foxing, smudging, stamps, pasteboards or other markings. It is not an ex-library book. The book has no wear and appears new. The book is richly illustrated. A truly wonderful Confederate memoir, here in a collectible, signed, First Edition that is in excellent condition.
