Description: This fine quality engraving of William Alexander, Earl of Stirling, who was a very popular Scottish poet during the second quarter of the 17th century. Born near Stirling, he was appointed as Secretary of State for Scotland in 1626. He briefly established a Scottish settlement at Port Royal, Nova Scotia and was appointed mayor of a vast territory which was enlarged into a lordship and barony of Nova Scotia. In 1637 a collection of his works was published - "Recreation of the Muses". Very few of these books included a portrait of William Alexander, engraved by William Marshall so 1st state copies of this print are very scarce. Due to this scarcity, William Richardson produced a copy in 1795.This engraving is trimmed very close to the engraved image all round including very close to the ribbon decoration at the bottom, so I am not sure which edition this is.
