Description: Offered is the antique book "Sketches of the Rise, Progress and Decline of Secession", written by W. G. Brownlow and published in 1862 by George W. Childs in Philadelphia. This "narrative of personal adventures among the rebels", written by the editor of the Knoxville Whig, is a first edition, with the printing date matching the "entered according to Act of Congress" date. There are several full-page black and white illustrations, including a frontispiece of the author. The book is approx. 7 1/2" x 5 1/4" and contains 458 pages, not including several additional pages in the back advertising other books by the publisher. It is in good to very good condition. The textured hard brown cover has only light wear overall, with a small area of moderate wear at the top of the spine. There are a few small surface chips and the corners are slightly turned inward. The gold words on the spine are partially faded but still readable and slightly shiny. There is no cracking inside either the front or back cover. The white endpapers have yellowed but are mostly clean. There is a small piece of tape inside of the front cover. I see no missing or torn pages and all of the pages are well-attached to the binding. They have yellowed and there is some occasional light foxing but are generally mostly clean and clear. The frontispiece image is faintly seen on the title page despite the continued presence of the tissue paper. I see no writing in the book. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions. I will do my best to answer them! Please take a moment to look at some of the other items in my eBay store!
