Description: Prehistoric sloth tooth fossil in display case. I'm not sure what the exact species is, but it is probably either Megalonyx jeffersonii or Paramylodon harlani. This fossil was found in North Florida and is from the Pleistocene Epoch. This tooth partial is about 1 1/4" x 1/2". The fossil comes in a unique display case and includes a laminated information card. All fossils sold are authentic. No replicas. Prehistoric SlothMegalonyx is an extinct genus of ground sloths of the family Megalonychidae, native to North America during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. The type species, M. jeffersonii, measured about 9.8 ft and weighed up to 2,200 lbs. Megalonyx had the widest distribution of any North American ground sloth, having a range encompassing most of the contiguous United States, extending as far north as Alaska during warm periods.Megalonyx jeffersonii was a large, heavily built herbivore about 9.8 ft long. It was comparable in size to a cow, with some specimens estimated to exceed 2,200 lbs. in mass. The hind limbs were flat-footed and this, along with its stout tail, allowed it to rear up into a semi-erect position to feed. The hands had three large claws, which were likely used for grasping and defense. The teeth of Megalonyx jeffersonii were high crowned.Megalonyx jeffersonii became extinct approximately 12,000 years ago at the end of the Late Pleistocene as part of the Quaternary extinction event, in which all other mainland ground sloths and most other large mammals of the Americas became extinct. Paramylodon is an extinct genus of ground sloth of the family Mylodontidae endemic to North America during the Pliocene through Pleistocene epochs, living from around ~4.9 Mya–11,000 years ago.Paramylodon lived in open landscapes, sometimes also in mountainous locations, and were grazers or mixed feeders. Preserved footprints are known. The morphology of the forelimbs has led to suggestions that Paramylodon may have engaged in burrowing.Within the genus only two species are recognized: Paramylodon harlani and Paramylodon garbanii.Like most other large, ground-dwelling, sloths, Paramylodon disappeared toward the end of the Pleistocene in the wake of the Quaternary extinction event.
