Description: "It was shot on a dark, dismal day. I met them at Piccadilly station."--Stephen Wright Inexperienced, the amateur photographer was a bit nervous. "I had the most nerve-wracking night the day before," Wright recalls. "I couldn't sleep because of the excitement of meeting them." No hairdresser, no make-up artist; it was just one guy, one bag, and a Nikon FE camera. As the story goes, the Smiths arrived by train from Euston for the shoot with Wright--a fan, basically. The location was Morrissey's idea: he thought that the backdrop would make for great production value, and clearly he was on to something. "I had no idea that it would become such a famous shot," says Wright. "I was just worried about making fundamental mistakes." He needn't have worried: it's a great shot, Morrissey in his BodyMap cardigan, looking confident, while Marr, looking typically pale, seems less self-assured. Joyce and Rourke simply lurk. Above them, and above adjoining victorian arches, the Salford Lads Club banner to the right and, sitting on the eaves, the Coronation Street sign. Iconic. These days it's the "Salford Lads & Girls Club," so they're no longer gender-exclusive, which is nice. Times do indeed change, but the Smith's music remains timeless. "It's not the picture that's a classic," says Wright, "it's the band that are classic." So heads up: I restocked my Smiths line, and it's doper than you could possibly imagine, so please stay tuned. And as you know, I'm extremely picky, generally-speaking, with what I stock here at casa de slim_punk, but I'm even pickier when it comes to Smiths tees. They have to look fabulous, and as you can see, this one does. It's nicely broken in without any flaws, sturdy but comfy, a perfect fit (see pics). What's great about this one, too, is that it doesn't promote any particular album (even though the shot appears on the inner sleeve of The Queen is Dead); it's just that classic shot, beautifully rendered here with the band name in baby blue--awesome. Slightly more affordable than the other ones I have listed, this one probably won't last long, so grab it while you can. Timelessly dope.
