Description: "Some Hawarden Letters, 1878-1913, Written to Mrs. Drew (Miss Mary Gladstone) Before and After Her Marriage" is a 366 page, 5.5"x8.5" hardcover published in 1918 by Dodd Mead & Co. (New York). This is the first American edition. Mary Gladstone was a daughter of William Ewart Gladstone, one of the most important British politicians of the 19th century - she was herself influential as his confidante and private secretary. This volume consists of letters written to her by various family members and friends over a 35 year period, which address matters both private and public. There are nine black-and-white illustrations. The book is in good condition, with no dust jacket. The brown cloth boards show edge wear, light rubbing, fraying at the back bottom corner, a small indentation along the front top edge. The front board is slightly concave. There are pencil marks on the front pastedown, ffep and title page. Several pages in the middle are bumped at the top corner. The binding is firm.
