Description: Title: Sotheby's Christos G. Bastis Collection Auction held in: New York Sale Date: 12/9/99 No. of Lots: 167 No. of Pages: 206 Condition: Good in a Hard-Cover Format and Dust Jacket Antiquities from the Collection of the late Christos G. Bastis, sold for $9,248,745 at Sotheby's this evening. The sale, Sotheby's second highest total for a sale of Antiquities , had been expected to bring $4.7 / 7.2million. The star of this evening's sale was a Polychrome Sandstone Head of King Amenhotep I, dating from the king's reign (1514-1493 B.C.) during the 18th Dynasty which sold for $1,157,500 - establishing a new world auction record for Egyptian art. This powerful representation of the ruler, shown wearing the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, is brightly painted in red with the facial details painted in black. In the catalog for the 1987 exhibition, Antiquities from the Collection of Christos G. Bastis at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, renowned scholar Bernard V. Bothmer refers to this head as "one of the outstanding royal sculptures of the Early New Kingdom." Richard M. Keresey, Senior Vice President and Worldwide Director of Sotheby's Antiquities Department, said: "Tonight's sale was an historic event in the field of antiquities, and collectors responded accordingly to the remarkable level of quality and taste which was evident throughout the Bastis Collection. There were extraordinary bidding battles on many of the lots and several sold for many multiples of the high estimate." Another highlight of this evening's sale was a Black Basalt Head of a Man (est: $100/150,000), late 26th / early 27th Dynasty, circa 550-500 B.C. which brought $772,500. A stunning example of the ancient Egyptian craftsman's ability to capture an individual likeness in an unyielding material, this head was heralded by scholars as ranking "among the great portrait-like representations of outstanding personalities in Egypt's late period." A Green Schist Head of the Goddess Selket, from the 26th Dynasty, soared past its pre-sale estimate of $125/175,000, when it sold for $580,000. The fragmentary head, which was a favorite of Mr. Bastis, presents a serene face with natural eyebrows and prominent cheekbones. There was active bidding in the room before it sold over the phone to an American Private Collector. A Greek Bronze figure of a Warrior, circa 530-520 B.C., was another highlight of this evening's sale, selling for $387,500. Wearing an ornamented tunic and a Corinthian helmet with high crest, the warrior strides purposefully with his right arm raised to hurl a spear formerly held in his hand. Cast solid and in remarkable condition, the warrior represents the finest in quality of late 6th Century B.C. Archaic-period Greek sculpture. The bronze was expected to bring $200/300,000. Another noteworthy highlight from the Classical section of the Bastis Collection is a 4th Century Greek Red-figure Fish Plate which sold for $32,200. Mr. Bastis's youth was spent in Volos, a major port in Greece, and this, together with his successful career as a Mediterranean restaurateur added to his delight in the subject painted on this plate. It is decorated with three fish swimming to the left around a central depression which was presumably used in antiquity to hold a kind of sauce served with the fish. This plate has been attributed by the great scholar of South Italian vases, Arthur D. Trendall, to the "Bastis Painter," named for its owner. It had been expected to bring $12/18,000.
