N24J 09-22-2024 Great Britain King Edward VII Natal 1902 Silver Coronation Medal THERE WERE THREE SIZES OF THIS MEDAL: THIS IS THE 29 mm VERSION FOR LOCAL DIGNITARIES. The small version of the medal (21 mm) was distributed to schoolchildren, whereas the large medal (51 mm) was restricted to native chiefs and is relatively scarce. It is believed that this mid-size medal (29 mm) was presented to local dignitaries.DESCRIPTION:silver, obverse with the right-facing bust of King Edward VII, surrounded by the inscription "TO COMMEMORATE THE CORONATION OF KING EDWARD VII" and engraver marked "J & S", reverse with the seal of Natal illustrating the British Royal coat-of-arms in the upper half and an ornamental frame in the lower half encasing a scene illustrating two wildebeests (gnu) galloping across a plain, inscribed "EDWARDUS DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR REX F:D" above and "COLONY OF NATAL 26 JUNE 1902" COMMENTS SECTION FROM NUMISTA: Laidlaw: These medals were issued to children attending Natal Government schools. This is the only known occasion where silver medals were issued to South African school children. The Natal Government believed that the financial outlay was a warranted celebration after the anxieties and deprivations of the Boer War. The reverse design (with different legend) appears on the obverse of the earlier Pietermaritzburg Agricultural Society medal.NOTE: The comment from Numista citing Laidlaw may be incomplete. I (Moore) believe that the smaller 21mm medal has never been confirmed to exist and the so-called Mid-sized 29 mm medal may be the one given to school children. I will research this and will revise as necessary. My measurement of this particular medal is 29mm but it's possible that the measurement may vary with different productions of the medal.
