About the Book:The South Pass series chronicles the journey of seventeen-year-old Sarah and her family from Pennsylvania to the Great Basin, where they settle in Lehi, Utah. The narrative begins with Sarah's father's sudden conversion to Mormonism during a business trip to New York, leading to their relocation and eventual participation in the first-ever experimental handcart company. Tragedy strikes halfway across Nebraska when Sarah's father passes away, leaving her to assume the parental role and guide her grieving mother and three younger siblings to their destination in the Salt Lake Valley. Each step of their arduous journey is fraught with uncertainty as they face the harsh realities of survival in the wilderness. As the Forbes family adjusts to life in Lehi, the South Pass series delves into pivotal events in Mormon history intertwined with broader United States history. From Johnston's Army and the Utah War to Camp Floyd and the Pony Express, the narrative unfolds against the backdrop of significant historical events. Subsequent books in the series expand on the family's experiences, from their involvement with Johnston's Army to life in the military fort of Camp Floyd and the adjoining civilian town of Frogtown. Through intricate storytelling, the series explores the intersection of personal struggles and larger historical forces, offering a compelling glimpse into the resilience and perseverance of pioneers during a tumultuous era. Beyond their initial settlement in Lehi, the South Pass series branches out to explore various facets of Utah's history, including the demise of the Pony Express, the mountain men era, and interactions with Native American communities. With each installment, readers are invited to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of frontier life, witnessing the triumphs and tribulations of the Forbes family as they navigate the challenges of forging a new existence in the American West. About the Author:Roger Blomquist Ph.D. was born and raised in the Wild West, spanning Utah, Texas, and the deserts of Southern California. Following an American Sign Language mission during the era of eighteen-month missions, he returned home to pursue schooling in drafting and design. Transitioning into a career as an architectural designer, a pivotal moment occurred when he was cast as a cavalry soldier in Johnston’s Army, leading him to Alpine, Utah, for the LDS film, "Mountain of the Lord." This experience ignited a passion for history, prompting him to return to academia to study American Frontier History at Brigham Young University under Fred Gowans. Inspired by his inability to afford period saddles for film, he learned the craft of saddlemaking from an old master, eventually earning his doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, specializing in Westward Expansion. Renowned as the Best Western Saddlemaker by True West Magazine in 2005, Roger continues his work in the film industry while also venturing into faith-based historical fiction writing after teaching university-level history for eight years.
