Description: Very Rare Choice Subject Spanish Colonial Peruvian Peru / Bolivian Bolivia School The Vision of St. James Triumphing Over the Inca oil on canvas ca. 18-19th century. The subject of Saint James battling indigenous warriors, known as Santiago Mataindios (Indian Killer), is the New World counterpart to the Spanish iconography of James triumphing over the Moors, Santiago Matamoros; by the mid-16th century, Spanish Colonial images of the saint presented him in this distinctly New World guise, at war with either Aztec or Inca combatants. Measures overall 36 x 28 1/2 inches canvas mounted on artist board with tiny scattered fleabites of paint loss and some varnish is yellowed.
