Shirra was one of the original NASA Mercury astronauts. Walter Marty Schirra Jr. was an American naval aviator, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. In 1959, he became one of the original seven astronauts chosen for Project Mercury, which was the United States' first effort to put humans into space. He was the third American to be launched into space and the only astronaut to fly in all of America's first three manned space programs. Wally Schirra died on 3/3/2007 at the age of 84.....A true "American Hero".
