Dymphna was born to a pagan chieftain and his Christian wife. Dymphna's mother died when she was a teenager and Dymphna's father left his kingdom to search for a new wife. When he returned empty-handed, he saw how Dymphna had grown to look like her mother and, mad with grief, made advances towards her. She fled with the family priest to Belgium with her father in pursuit. He father tracked them down, killed the priest, and in a rage, killed his daughter as well. An institution for the mentally ill was built on the site of her martyrdom and is still in operation today. The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece.
