He was the leader of the French Republic as First Consul from 1799 to 1804, and then an Emperor of the French Empire from 1804 to 1814, and briefly again in 1815. Saint Helena Island is considered one of the most remote island in the world. It was selected by British government as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte's exile in 1815, after the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's second abdication on 22nd June 1815 and his final surrender to Captain Frederick Maitland on HMS Bellerophon on 15th July 1815. He was taken to St. Helena Island in October 1815 and stayed initially at the Briars pavilion on the grounds of the Balcombe family's home, until his permament residence at Longwood House was completed in December 1815. He died there on 5th of May 1821. Napoleon is considered one of the greatest military commanders in history, and his campaigns are still studied at military schools worldwide.
