A cure is a parish priest, and St John Vianney was the parish priest of Ars, France. The reverse shows St Philomena with the inscription "St Philomene Priez Pour Nous" (St Philomena Pray for Us). St John Vianney was very dedicated to St Philomena and credited her intervention for the answer of many of his prayers. It was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. He grew up on his family's farm and longed to become a priest, but was a very poor student. He finally was ordained in 1815 and became parochial vicar of a parish that suffered from very poor attendance and fervor. Fr John began to visit his parishioners, spent hours in front of the Blessed Sacrament and led his congregation by example. He became a gifted priest who was known for his discernment in confession and amazing preaching ability. Crowds flocked to his church for reconciliation and to hear his homilies. By 1855 there were over 20,000 people a year making pilgrimage to his church in Arles, France. The body of St Philomena was found in 1802 during the course of an archaeological dig in the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome. Her grave was covered with tiles marked with symbols indicating that it was the grave of a martyr named Philomena. It was determined that she was martyred at age 14 during the early days of the church. After her body was moved to a chapel in Mungano, Italy, many miracles were attributed to her intercession including the healing of illnesses, blindness, wounds, and the overnight cure of a severe heart ailment. She is the only person to be made a saint based solely on miraculous intercession and answer to prayers.
