It has the image of St Kateri on the front with her name and "1656-1680", all surrounded by a decorative border. On the back of the medal is "Canonization 2012" and an image of her Shrine in Canada. We have attached it to a 24" stainless steel chain which is continuous, meaning it has no clasp, just slip it over the head: no clasps to worry about. Fits over most size heads. This medal and chain comes gift boxed and a St Kateri prayer card and a card with the Litany of the Lily of the Mohawks. We also include a gift bag and tissue paper, so your medal comes all ready to give as a gift. The prayer cards which come with our rosaries, medals and pictures are home-made, created using a "greeting card" program on a computer and printed in full color on nice quality paper. Although they are not like the usual smaller professionally printed prayer cards, most of our customers prefer them since they are like a pamphlet with 4 "pages" and several images, prayers, patronages and often other information about the saint or Catholic devotion. Kateri (also called Catherine) Tekakwitha was the daughter of a Christian Algonquin woman who was captured and given in marriage to a Mohawk chief. She was orphaned during a smallpox epidemic which left her face scarred. When she was baptized a Christian she suffered persecution from her Mohawk relatives and tribe, and escaped from them to join a village of other Christian Native Americans. When she died in 1680, it was said that the scars on her face disappeared and her face became beautiful again. Her grave became (and still is) a place of miracles. She is the first Native American to be canonized. St Kateri is the patron saint of Ecology and the environment and those who seek to protect and conserve our beautiful natural resources, which is fitting as she lived in the beautiful northern forests of upstate New York and the Adirondacks. She is also a patron of orphans and people who are ridiculed for their piety.
