Description: St. Kateri Tekakwitha Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Kateri, Mohawk for Catherine The 17th-century Mohawk-Algonquin woman is the first member of a North American tribe to be declared a Saint, when she was canonized October 21st 2012. Orphaned at age 4 during a smallpox epidemic, Kateri (Kah-Terry) The native Americans pronounce it “Gah-The-Lee”, was left pockmarked and nearly blind by the disease. She was legally blind and in a dark longhouse where she was raised, she was always reaching for things and knocking them down or bumping into someone. So her uncle jokingly laughed “Look how she bumps into things” So the Mohawks gave her the name Tekakwitha. The English translation is “Bumps into things” All our medals are high quality Oxidized metal with jump ring and made in Italy.
