Description: Antique Staffordshire Pearlware Bird Cage The subject of the bird catchers group is allegorical of Liberty and Matrimony. The earliest English interpretations of this figure were made from the 1750s by Bow and Derby after Meissen figures of 1750-1752. This figure was possibly made by Ralph Wood or his son in the late 18th Century. It is more thickly potted than what you are used to seeing. Late 18th Century. Approx 10.5"H X 6"W. Provenance: Prominent Private Collection Documentation: Schkolne Staffordshire, Holding the Past, p. 228, Wintherthur Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum Condition: Flaking to glaze, chip to base, possible professional restoration to man head/hat, losses to foliage and bocage, otherwise minor imperfection to be expected.
