Description: WELCOME to my ebay store! This listing is for a Staffordshire style porcelain figural known as a "Fairing." The theme on this one is the couple climbing into bed with the title: "The last in bed to put out the light" which is the most common theme of fairings seen over the years at antique sales. China fairings are so named because they were given away as prizes at fairs in the early Victorian era, although some were manufactured simply for sale. They first started appearing in the middle of the nineteenth century and remained popular until the start of the First World War. So most likely this piece was made toward the end of the fairing era. These fairings were made in England and Germany; most made in Germany by the firm Conta and Boehme. This company developed a mass production method that no other company could match, thereby achieving an advantage over other firms. I think this is a later fairing from the end days of the tradition, and interestingly, the candle is intact. An English friend told me most people snapped the candle off for good luck when the person won the item at the funfair after some sort of contest. The same themed fairing of a couple getting into bed, one has to put the candle out, was made by Conte Boehme is the most common. This piece is in truly mint condition. Looking at the face- there is rather crudely painted features I have no idea of the date of manufacture of this piece, it came from a UK estate sale. Without knowing the age or maker I can just state the piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks to the porcelain body. There are no makers marks on bottom. It measures 3 3/4" deep 2 1/2" wide 3" tall Please see my many listings from Antique dolls and porcelain, to gently used and new clothing. Positive feedback is always greatly appreciated!
