Lincoln wanted the patterns to be accurate to the original filming costumes, so to that end Majel Barrett-Roddenberry hired costumers to create them. Some were even created by Star Trek and Star Trek the Next Generation Costume Designer William Ware Theiss. These are not commercially produced patterns such as McCall's or Simplicity offers.
