The Tribe continued a swoon that had started earlier in August seeing them drop to 2nd for the first time, but a 20-6 September sealed the pennant. Speaker (.388 69 XBH) led the offense and Jim Bagby won 31 games. In the Series the Tribe pitchers dominated the Robins posting a 0.89 ERA. 1924 Washington Senators (def NYG 4-3 in WS)The first of back to back Series appearances for the Senators came just near the end of the Big Trains’ magnificent career. At 36, Johnson (23-7 2.72) rebounded from a number of pedestrian seasons to win the pitching Triple Crown and the MVP award. The Senators outstanding pitching and defense, which allowed a .259 batting average as opposed to the league average of .290, compensated for a mediocre offense which featured only one outstanding hitter, Goose Goslin (.344 129 RBI). 1927 New York Yankees (def PIT 4-0 in WS)What needs to be said? Murderers Row Hit .307, led the league in HRs by 102, gave up 103 fewer runs than the next best defense and won the pennant by 19 games. Six Hall of Famers, Ruth, Gehrig (MVP), Combs, Lazzeri, Pennock, and Hoyt lead what is considered by many to be the greatest team ever. 1929 Philadelphia A’s (def CHN 4-1 in WS)The one AL team that managed to regularly challenge the Ruth era Yankees, the A’s had their own stable of HOFers with a 21 year old Foxx (33 HR), Cochrane (.331), Simmons (157 RBI) and the dominant pitcher of the era, Lefty Grove (20-6 2.81). Connie Mack used his pitching depth to keep fresh arms on the mound allowing his hurlers to only complete 70 games and recording 24 saves. 1932 New York Yankees (def CHN 4-0 in WS)The only Yankee pennant winning team between 1928 and 1936 and the last to feature both Ruth and Gehrig. Didn’t match the record 1067 runs of ’31 (1,002) but won the Series, scoring 37 runs in 4 games. 1933 Washington Senators (lost NYN 1-4 in WS)Last pennant winner for Washington and the most wins of any Senators team. Only team with fewer than one error per game and went 36-17 in 1 run games and 52-23 on the road. The first of Joe Cronin’s 13 years as player/manager. 1935 Detroit Tigers (def CHN 4-2 in WS)1934 team won 101 but lost in World Series. Greenberg, Gehringer and Cochrane lead a potent offense that scored 95 more runs than the 2nd best offense. Despite a miserable 19-27 record in 1 run games during the season, the Tigers win three 1 run games in the Series. 1939 New York Yankees (def CIN 4-0 in WS)The most dominant of the four straight championship teams from 1936-1939, this Yankee team scored 411 more runs than it allowed (967-556) en route to a 17 game lead on the last day of the season despite Babe Dahlgren (.235/15/89) replacing the ailing Lou Gehrig (.295/29/114 in ’38) who would play his final game on April 30th. NATIONAL LEAGUE1922 New York Giants (beat NYY 4-0-1)McGraw’s men hit .302 (2nd in the NL!) with Heinie Groh being the only regular not to break the .300 plateau. The pitching staff was a patchwork of veterans yet paced the league in ERA by keen use of relief pitching (20-11 14 Sv 3.35 ERA out of the pen). They handled the Yanks easily in the series but the balance of power was shifting in Gotham. 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates (beat WAS 4-3)This season saw an explosion of offense in the NL that would continue until 1930. The Pirates hit a cool .307 and swiped 159 bases led by Max Carey (.343 46SB) and Kiki Cuyler (.357 41SB). A non-descript pitching staff anchored by Lee Meadows (19-10 3.67) posted the 2nd best ERA and despite having no 20 games winner did boast 5 15+ game winners. However, the team did commit a league high 224 errors. 1931 St. Louis Cardinals (def. PHA 4-3 in WS)Beat a great A’s team in series, extremely durable starting pitching is most notable asset, every one of them posting an ERA of 3.65 or lower (league 3.86) during the season and 2.32 ERA vs the A’s in the series. 1933 New York Giants (def. WAS 4-1 in WS)Terry (.322) and Ott (23 HR, 103 RBI) provide most of the run support for a stellar pitching staff led by Hubbell (23-12, 5 Sv, 1.66), Schumacher (19-12 2.16), Fitzsimmons (2.90) and a double barrel bullpen of Hi Bell (2.05) and Dolf Luque (2.69). Hubbell fires two CG wins in the series posting a 0.00 ERA (allowed 3 UER). 1935 Chicago Cubs (Lost to DET 2-4 in WS)Won 21 straight games in September to go from 2.5 out to winning by 4. Led the league in runs scored and allowed. Gabby Hartnett (.344) won the MVP, Warneke (3.06) and Bill Lee (2.96) both posted 20 wins, however the Cubbies futility in the World Series would continue in a 4-2 loss the Tigers. 1940 Cincinnati Reds (def. DET 4-3 in WS)The Reds rebounded from a hammering by the Yankees in the ‘39 series, breaking the 100 win plateau with a dominant pitching staff led by Bucky Walters (22-10, 2.48) and Paul Derringer (20-12, 3.06) who won all 4 games in the series as the rest of the staff struggled. Despite being outscored 27-16 in the first 5 games, the Reds slammed the door on the Tigers in games 6 and 7 winning 4-0 and 2-1. 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers (lost to NYY 1-4 in WS)The Dodgers battled the Cardinals all year, capturing their first pennant in 21 years. Sophomore Pete Reiser (.343, 70 XBH, 117 runs) lit up the league with his bat and glove and veteran Dolph Camilli (34 HR, 120 RBI) led the league in HR and RBI. 33 year old Whit Wyatt turned in a career year (22-10, 2.77) . But in what would become an all to familiar refrain, the Bums season came to an end with a defeat at the hands of the Yankees in the Series. 1942 St. Louis Cardinals (def NYY 4-1 in WS) The Cardinals took revenge on the Dodgers in ’42, posting one of the most impressive late season runs in history going 46-12 over the last two months. Max Lanier bested the Bums 2-1 on Sept. 12 to tie the matter and the Cards never relinquished the lead again. They would go on to down the Yankees 4-1 in the Fall Classic. By 1943 most of baseball’s stars would be in the services and while MLB would continue, many of its stars would be absent for the next three years. *25-29 players per team.
