DESCRIPTION: In the opinion of many, Steuben crystal is the finest American glass of our time. James Plaut is the first author to devote an entire book to the subject of post-Carder Steuben. Beginning with the discovery of the unique formula for "crystal" in the early 1930's, Plaut describes the subsequent reorganization of the Steuben Division of the Corning Glass Works, the formation of the Gates-Waugh-Houghton triumvirate which saw Steuben through its adolescent phases, and the development of a distinctive product style by 1939. This is followed by a detailed discussion of the history, lore and workings of the traditional shop system under which Steuben is produced, including helpful illustrations of the glass in its various stages of completion. The carefully selected plates form a uniquely rich collection of outstanding photographic quality and represent the best of the significant Steuben designs from each important period. Following this discussion are a listing of the major public collections of Steuben crystal and an index of its important international exhibitions - a very good cross-reference for dealers and collectors.
