Description: Doubleday, Doran, and Co. 1936, First edition (Stated). 290 pages, 7 black and white drawings, 36 essays. The author was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. He worked in the New York journalism and publishing business, edited and contributed to literary magazines, and wrote many books (Wikipedia lists 25, first in 1917). The essays in this volume mostly appeared first in magazines. Many involve people and places in New York, literature, books, the publishing business, and whatever else struck his fancy (such as the title essay for this collection.) According to Wikipedia, his final message to his readers was: "Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to continually be part of unanimity." Condition: Very good in very good dust jacket. Gray boards with red design (gilt lettering on spine) show minimal shelf wear; binding is tight with some looseness at front and rear hinges: a little age browning to endpapers; no writing, no names, no marks on pages; text block w/top edge red is clean. Dust jacket has very small chips at bottom edge and small tears top and bottom edges. Largest tear at top center front is one inch - repair with tape on inside. See scans.
