Description: Sunderland lustreware bat-printed handleless cup and saucer, c.1840. Appears to be pearlware based on blue tint of glaze puddles at feet of teacup and saucer. One side depicts a Goat & a small cherub (with wings) resting his hands on the goat; the other side shows a woman, holding a Dove or small bird perched on her right hand. The saucer has a small, impresses “X”-like symbol. The cup has a relatively spherical bowl shape with pink/green (interior band) lustre band at the rim and narrow bands within the cup and around its base. The images are in black and appear to be bat printed, an overglaze technique that produced a design that can wear off. Similar lustre-banded wares were produced by Swell (active 1804-1820, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland), New Hall (active 1782-1835, Shelton, Staffordshire), and the Sunderland Pottery (active 1807-1865, Sunderland, Durham). Seven of the 16 potteries at Sunderland are known to have produced lustreware, as did potteries at Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool, Bristol, and Swansea. See photos for condition. Cracks, wear, and discoloration, chip to foot of cup. Display stand not included. CONDITION : Very good condition. Small black spot, at bottom near giril- happened during the firing process.
