Click images to enlarge Description A SUPERB ANTIQUE FRENCH NAPOLEAN III PICTURE FRAME / MIRROR ~ ... this is a fabulous & elaborate antique picture frame/mirror with a wonderful ancient Gallic quality, Napoleon III I would say in style, so French in design ~ glass & backing is available if you do not wish to utilise as a mirror ~ Measuring approximately 28" by 17 & 1/4" (External) ~ Sight size OR Mirror size is 11 & 1/2" by 7 & 7/8" ~ ... it's difficult to take decent photos of mirrors or frames with any sort of glass, mirrored glass which is naturally reflective and can suck the light out of a photograph (see photo 19) even at a 45-degree angle & so I have used brown wrapping paper in some of the pictures to reduce any glare & tried to illustrate the beauty of the border design here, photos were taken on a dull day, so please bear this in mind when looking at the photos ~ ... what we have is an extraordinary border design of elaborate brass coverings of various foliate & classical shapes including a wonderful mirror-backed crest, this sophisticated metalwork is known (in France) as Repoussé & dates back to pre-historic times, the thin metal, in this case brass, is fixed in place with a plethora of tiny pins, it must have taken an absolute age to achieve ~ ... dating at a guess to the late 1800s this is a fabulous mirror cum picture frame, I've only had a few of these in the past & I found each of them in France & so I am guessing that this one is also à la Française, it certainly has more than a bit of a Gallic kick ~ ... the mirror, in my opinion, is not in the greatest condition, I've seen lots better, it is showing its age & has several age-related speckles & so I see this piece as perhaps currently more of a frame than a mirror, you may wish to keep it a mirror as it was originally intended OR convert it simply to a frame ~ ... entirely built by hand the term for the brasswork is repoussé & as an art form dates back to prehistoric times, the brass is worked from the back & so repoussé means literally 'pushed up' & there are a myriad of tiny brass pins holding everything in place &, again it seems that all are in place, amazing when you consider the age & the fact that everything is done by hand, must have taken an age, sheer labour of love ~ ... a fabulous frame, wonderful design with a nod to many an art movement of the past, Nouveau, Deco, Arts & Crafts even Carolingian Art all come to my mind & also bring thoughts of heraldry & the French Dauphins of old, think of good old Charlemagne ~ This frame will suit a special picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one, it is certainly, a frame to grace any wall ~ Thank you for looking ~ If you have any questions please ask ~ Condition In Very Good condition, especially given the age; the brass has dulled with age, I haven't attempted to clean in any way 'to clean OR not to clean, that is the question but I suspect it may come up a treat with the right chemicals, the mirror is also quite dull & there are foxing type speckles dotted around, the mirror itself is bevelled & I would think original but despite this, you may wish, if you were to use this primarily as a mirror you may wish to source a new mirror glass, which is easy to source & certainly not expensive in my experience ~ the brass has naturally dulled over the years but happily I can't see any missing pieces OR any missing brass pins OR in fact any major losses; perhaps with the odd minor age commensurate ding here & there, but in truth, nothing particularly noteworthy ~ Super strong corners ~ Age commensurate wear ~ With NO major damages OR losses ~ Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the very good antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...
