He was a symbolist painter of the turn of the last century. He did mostly religious subjects, and he clearly had a deep heart for Mary and especially this moment. He always captures the delicacy as well as the the profundity of it. We love how sweet and vulnerable Mary looks in this one. How gentle the whole scene is. Nesterov has several more Annunications, and they're all wonderful. We'll likely carry them all someday. This subject in a painting, this is the beginning of the Salvation of the World.
