Until now, very little has been written about this important and intriguing engagement. David Hinze and Karen Farnham have lifted the veil of obscurity with The Battle of Carthage: Border War in Southwest Missouri, July 5, 1861, the first book on this influential early war battle. The genesis of the fight is fascinating. After tugging political strings, Federal officer Nathaniel Lyon captured the ammunition-packed St. Louis Arsenal, forcing the gathering pro-Southerners to fall back west along the Missouri River. When the clarion call for war was unleashed by the state’s governor, Claiborne F. Jackson, hastily formed militia units gathered to defeat the despised Federals. Officered by such colorful men as Sterling Price and Mosby Parsons, the vaunted Missouri State Guard prepared for battle. The state army’s disastrous maiden performance in the skirmish at Boonville, however, prompted Jackson to withdraw his small and ill-prepared force south in two columns to avoid being trapped and destroyed in the northern half of the state. In a bold campaign designed to destroy the State Guard, Nathaniel Lyon moved against Jackson from the north while a second Federal column drove southwest from St. Louis to cut off the withdrawing Rebels. This second wing was spearheaded by the impetuous Colonel Franz Sigel, who sought a confrontation with the enemy in the hopes of obtaining a promotion to general. Early on the morning of July 5, 1861, Sigel found Jackson’s state army waiting for him in a line of battle ten miles north of the small town of Carthage. By the time Sigel realized that Jackson heavily outnumbered him, Southern cavalrymen were thundering around his flanks to encircle and destroy him. Burdened with 32 valuable supply wagons, the veteran officer was forced to improvise a series of remarkable rearguard actions designed to save his wagons and his army. The result was one of the most exciting battles of the war, a running series of engagements covering more than ten miles of rolling Missouri prairie. In addition to a full account of the campaign, The Battle of Carthage includes: Detailed tactical coverage of the opening artillery duel, Dry Fork Creek, Buck’s Branch, Ordnuff Hill, the fighting in Carthage, the late evening assaults against the Rive Road line, plus the engagements of Boonville and Neosho; In depth biographical sketches and critical evaluations of the major participants on both sides and the roles they played in the campaign and battle; Exhaustive analysis of what really happened on July 5th, with several major new interpretations of how the fighting evolved and why it was fought the way it was; and, Comprehensive original maps, photos and illustrations, a detailed discussion of casualties, explanatory end notes, and order of battle and in-depth interview with author David C. Hinze on the researching and writing of the book. This wonderful book is a special Centennial Edition, a facsimile copy of the original edition published in 1883. The book also provides added introductory material about the battle. THIS BOOK IS IN MINT CONDITION This wonderful book is new, unread and in pristine condition.
