Description: 'The Battle Of The Somme', by John Masefield. Published by William Heinemann. 1919. This is number 197 of a limited edition of 250 copies. Please see the pictures for the outside of the book. The inside is clean and tight. There is an intriguing bookplate on the inside board that need to be researched. Masefield served with the Red Cross in France and Gallipoli after being refuse a commission on medical grounds. He spent a great deal of time on the Somme in 1916 with the intention of writing the Official History later. This didn't happen, so this book was produced in frustration.
