The Descent of Man - 1st issue - 1871 - Charles Darwin - First Edition

Description: The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sexby Charles DarwinFirst edition, first issue with the uncorrected textPublisher and Year: John Murray (London, UK): 1871-Edition: First edition, first issue (both volumes), per the following issue points: Volume 1 has "transmitted" as the first word on page 297 and Volume 2 has the list of errata on the verso of the title page. Only 2,500 copies of the first issue were produced. In the Origin of Species (1859), Darwin withheld applying his theories regarding the evolution of animals to humans. He waited 12 years for someone else to take up the thorny issue but ended up tackling the topic himself in the Descent of Man. Darwin first uses the word "evolution" in any of his works on the second page of Volume 1 (he thereafter included the term in the subsequent edition of The Origin in 1872). Each volume was produced in heights of 190 or 185 mm. In this case, Vol 1 is 190 mm and Vol 2 is 185 mm. Bibliographic reference: Freeman, the Works of Charles Darwin (1977). -Condition and Description: Two volumes, octavo (7.5" x 5"), in publisher's green cloth with gilt titling and ornamental rules on the spine. Blank embossed front boards. Black endpapers. Sixteen pages of advertisements in the rear of each volume. 76 woodcut illustrations. The green boards present nicely on both volumes, with some of the normal wear. Volume 1: front hinge cracking but still attached and functional. A partially removed bookplate on the front endpaper. A small pencil note on the front flyleaf. The binding is solid throughout; however, there are a few places where the binding is overopened. Nevertheless, the text is still firmly attached. Volume 2: hinges and binding tight. Light foxing on the flyleaves. A small closed tear on the page facing the title page. Free and clear of writing and underlining. - “As man advances in civilization, and small tribes are united into larger communities, the simplest reason would tell each individual that he ought to extend his social instincts and sympathies to all members of the same nation, though personally unknown to him. This point being once reached, there is only an artificial barrier to prevent his sympathies extending to the men of all nations and races.” ― Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man - Inventory ID: C - 338 - 753 - 118 - C
