Description: Vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the early sound era murder mystery / courtroom drama, THE DRAKE CASE, released in 1929 by Universal Pictures and directed by Edward Laemmle. Lulu Marks (Gladys Brockwell), disguised as a maid, comes to the home of her divorced husband, believed to be deceased, and is accused of murdering Mrs. Drake (Doris Lloyd), her husband's second wife. Lulu has discovered that Mrs. Drake wished to make her stepdaughter, Georgia (Barbara Leonard), a drug addict so that she and someone else might gain possession of her estate. Lulu keeps quiet as to the identity of the "someone else" until it is proved in court that the co-conspirator and murderer of Mrs. Drake is none other than her husband, who has concealed his identity so well that he has become Georgia's fiance. The image features an interior medium shot inside of a courtroom as Bill, the burglar (Tom Dugan), watches the angry reaction of Detective Condon (William L. Thorne) in response to what he has told him. The border artwork at the left features a different character on each scene card and this one depicts the film's star, Gladys Brockwell, as "Lulu Marks." Printed for the film's original 1929 US theatrical release by Universal Pictures, this vintage original lobby card is unrestored in fine+ condition with two 0.25 in. diagonal creases on the tip of the top left corner with a light 0.5 in. diagonal crease beneath it; a 0.75 in. vertical tear on the center of the top border; a 1 in. and 0.5 in. crease on the top right corner; a 1 in. vertical crease on the bottom right corner; and two 0.5 in. creases in the bottom border and lower credits area just beneath the "R" in "DRAKE." There are no pinholes, stains, or other flaws and the color tints are fresh and vibrant without any signs of fading. This card is even more attractive when viewed in person. Provenance: The Morris Everett Jr. Collection (acquired by the seller at auction). Sadly, Gladys Brockwell, the film's star, died at the age of 34 on July 2, 1929 just a few months before this film was initially released on September 1, 1929.
