Description: VG+ / VG-VG+. 1940 Houghton, Mifflin & Co., first edition / early (but not first) printing - no date on title page. Hardcover with dust jacket. I think I’ve touched on this in a previous listing or two, but I’m struck again by how many young, confident writers there seemed to be in the 1940’s/early 1950’s. Carson McCullers was 23 when this was published. If I recall correctly, when Gore Vidal was 22, he had already published two novels and was working on a third. Truman Capote, considered the great young writer of the time, didn’t even get a book published until the ripe old age of 24. Toss in Norman Mailer and Flannery O’Connor who were practically Grandparents comparatively, releasing their first novels after the age of 25, and I think you’ve got a pretty impressive starting five to throw up against other generations. I’ll leave it to the sociologists to explain or debunk. This is also one of my favorite cover designs - I think it’s evocative of the film credits look from that era, and I ingested a steady diet of 1940’s films as a youngster.
