Description: First published in 1958, this study of national income was recognized as a "monumental work" and the culmination of 25 years of study by the author. "By taking a historical, as well as a theoretical approach to the subject of national income, the author has provided a means for a better understanding of the importance of the field of economic analysis. Volume I, HIstory, focuses on England, France, and Russian in the 16th-19th centuries and the early attempts by contemporary scholars to quantify the national economies of each country at that time. With the industrialization of the late 19th and 20th centuries it became easier to study and describe national economic output through quantification of agricultural and industrial production. Part II, Theory and Methodology, looks at contemporary analysis including means to study economic productivity that is not easily quantifiable, such as home-based businesses, child care, rents, etc. From the estate of Edward Kane, an internationally recognized economist specializing in banking and financial regulation. Kane held the James. F. Cleary Chair in Finance at Boston College until retirement, and earlier in his career taught for 20 years at Ohio State. His analysis informed modern banking regulations and, as a fan of comic books and horror movies, he is also remembered for coining the now widely-known term "zombie banks".
