In recognition of the region's heritage, Kootenay Savings Credit Union in 1981 commissioned artist Mal Gagnon to share his graphic impressions of eight towns that flourished during the mining boom. It was therefore fitting that the project begin on the ocassion of the 75th anniversary of Cominco Ltd.a premiere mining and smelting company in Canada. Included in the series are scenes of Rossland, Trail, Nelson, Sandon, Nakusp, Sproats Landing (Castlegar), Grand Forks and Salmo. Drawn from historical photos provided by community and provincial archives this ambitious project is the culmination of nearly two thousand hours, spanning over four years. Most artists use the pencil only as a preliminary means to an end but in this project Mal has explored it as a serious medium in itself. IMAGE DESCRIPTION - "Nakusp - circa 1900" ... in 1892 a rough pack road was constructed from Sandon down to Slocan Lake and north to the Arrow Lakes where ore from the mines were loaded on steamers for transport to smelters in the United States. A small settlement quickly grew around the steamer landing. Christened "Nakusp" the town became an important link in the transportation system developed to serve the mines of the Slocan. THE PRINT - Reproduced in the offset printing process as a half-tone print in a buffalo brown ink on a high quality heavy Buckeye antique white rag paper printing stock.
